Notebook cooling / stands South Africa.

Keep your laptop running cool, improving the performance of the laptop and increasing the laptops' components lifespan.

Laptop stands lifts the laptop to a more comfortable eye level, and lifts the keyboard to make typing easier.

Why use a cooling stand?
  1. Reduce heat inside the laptop. This will increase the life of components.
  2. Improve performance. As components overheat, the laptop will throttle speed down to reduce the heat. A cool laptop performs better for longer.
  3. Remove dust before it gets in. Negative pressure laptop stands will remove dust before it enters the laptops, this will reduce the need for maintenance.

Passive cooling laptop stands.

Passive cooling stands do not have a fan, they lift the laptop off the surface, and provides a gap between the laptop and the surface

Passive cooling stands works because of several reasons:
  1. The airflow under the laptop improves. The cooler air can be drawn into the laptop with no restriction.
  2. A laptop on a flat solid surface tends to heat up that surface, increasing the temperature that is drawn into the laptop. The laptop stand will provide a gap between the surface and the laptop base, thereby eliminating this heating effect.
  3. A laptop on a soft surface, such as on a carpet, or on a person's lap, will overheat because the inlets are blocked, the surface will get hot, and the laptop will heat up as the air is being restricted. A stand will improve air circulation, and prevent this heating effect.

Active cooling laptop stands.

Active cooling stands have the same benefits as passive laptops stands, with the additional benefit of a fan, or several fans.

They may also cosmetic features, such lighting, as well as beneficial features, such as additional USB ports.

Some disadvantages of active coolers are increased power consumption (especially important when powering from batteries), and increased noise at higher fan speeds.

Active coolers with low RPM fans (1200rpm to 1600rpm) consume between 1 to 5 Watts, and will run off a USB port, whereas high RPM fans (up to 6000rpm) can be as much as 20 Watts and require an external power supply.

It is recommended to look at an active cooling pad that has an on/off switch for the fan and/or LED lighting, as well as adjustable speeds. The novelty of LED lighting may wear off, and the fan speed can be adjusted for the best cooling without higher noise levels. Cooling pads with several low RPM fans will be virtually silent compared to a cooling pad with a single high RPM fan. Additional USB ports are recommended because you will need to trade one USB port for power.

Active cooling stands works better than passive stands because of several reasons:
  1. The fans increase the air flow circulating under the laptop, removing hot and stale air from the laptop base, and circulating cooler air under the base of the laptop.

  2. Negative pressure laptop stands sucks air away from the base, and the cooler air travels from the sides of the base, along the bottom of the laptop, and the cooler air gets sucked into the air vents by the laptop's own fans.

The advantage of negative pressure active stands is that dust will be drawn away from the laptop before it enters the air-vents. This will drastically reduce the accumulation of dust, hair, pet dander, etc. in the heat-pipe fins, inlets, fans and laptop interior.

The majority of laptop cooling stands are negative pressure, because the benefits usually outweigh any disadvantages.

  3. Positive pressure laptop stands blows air directly onto the laptop base, it has the same effect as the negative pressure laptop stand where cooler air is blown across the bottom of the laptop, but it moves from the center of the laptop base, and out of the base sides.  An advantage is that air is blown directly into the air-vents under the laptop, and this may help cool off any exposed heat sinks and heat pipes, which may improve cooling and performance.

Laptops are designed to extract the maximum amount of heat with the limited space it has. They make use of heat-pipes, cooling fins and fan configurations to cool the laptop down, and additional circulating air inside the laptop may, or may not, have an additional cooling effect.

A disadvantage is that dust is blown directly into the laptop, which will speed up the accumulation of dust and other unwelcome bits and pieces inside the laptop.  This dust will quickly clog the heat-pipe fins, air intakes and fans. The laptop will require regular maintenance to remove the dust as this will clog cooling fins, which will cause overheating and reduce performance after a short time. Fans will run faster and for longer, and may accumulate even more dust and hair, causing them to eventually seize. (An air duster and anti-static brush is recommended to remove dust from the laptop interior every 6 to 12 months)
