AC Power Cables in South Africa: Types, Core Options & Safety

AC power cables are at the heart of every safe electrical system. From domestic wiring with surfix cables to heavy-duty industrial applications, choosing between solid core and multi-strand conductors, earthed vs unearthed designs, and the correct cable diameter ensures reliable performance and compliance with South African standards.

Types of AC Cables

  • Surfix Cable - flat twin and earth cable commonly used in homes and offices for lighting and plug circuits.
  • Low Current Cable - thinner cables (1.0 mm2 to 1.5 mm) designed for lights and control circuits.
  • High Current Cable - thicker copper conductors (4 mm2 and above) for appliances like geysers, stoves, and air conditioners.

Cable Core Options

  • 2 Core (Unearthed) - live and neutral only. Used for double-insulated appliances.
  • 3 Core (Earthed) - live, neutral, and earth. The standard for most home and office wiring.
  • 4 Core Cable - used in three-phase systems, often in factories and workshops.

Solid Core vs Multi-Strand Cables

Electrical cables can either have a single solid conductor or multiple fine strands twisted together. Each has unique advantages and typical applications:

  • Solid Core Cable
    • Pros: Lower resistance per length, easier to terminate, holds shape, cost-effective.
    • Cons: Less flexible, prone to breaking if bent repeatedly.
    • Common Uses: Fixed installations in walls, ceilings, and distribution boards where cables are not moved.
  • Multi-Strand Cable
    • Pros: Highly flexible, resists vibration and bending stress, safer for moving parts and portable equipment.
    • Cons: Slightly higher resistance, more expensive, requires ferrules or careful termination.
    • Common Uses: Extension leads, industrial machinery, vehicles, and applications requiring frequent bending.

Why Cable Diameter Matters

The cross-sectional size of a cable determines how much current it can safely carry. Choosing the right thickness avoids overheating and reduces fire risk.

  • 1.0 mm2 - up to 10A, suitable for small lighting circuits.
  • 1.5 mm2 - up to 15A, used for lighting and light-duty plugs.
  • 2.5 mm2 - up to 20A, standard for household plug points.
  • 4 mm2 - 6 mm2 - 25A to 32A, geysers, ovens, and air conditioners.
  • 10 mm2 and above - for heavy industrial loads and three-phase equipment.

Applications in South Africa

  • Homes: Surfix cables for lighting, plugs, and appliances.
  • Offices: Flexible multi-strand cables for equipment and data centres.
  • Industry: High current, multi-core, and three-phase cables for motors, pumps, and switchgear.

Always consult a qualified electrician when selecting AC cables. Using the right type, diameter, and core design ensures safety, efficiency, and compliance with South African electrical regulations.
