Basic external graphics A USB or Thunderbolt graphics converter gives you the ability to connect monitors to your tablet, smart phone, PC or laptops. A number of graphics adapters convert one graphics standard to another (such as Display Port to HDMI, HDMI to VGA) It does not offer any performance advantages, and will likely suffer from performance issues in gaming and video streaming scenarios. The USB to graphics adapters are meant as a means to connect external monitors to smart devices, and to connect multiple monitors to a system without the need for additional graphics cards. The advantage is working on multiple desktops at the same time, mainly in an office environment. External monitor adapters are available as a stand-alone unit, or built into docking stations. Advanced external graphics External graphics card docks connect to a PC / laptop through USB or Thunderbolt connections. The advanced devices delivers gaming desktop performance on any system. A graphics card (GPU) is required. The external GPU dock has a PCIe port for the graphics card, and either a Thunderbolt or USB-C cable to connect to your computer. The GPU is connected inside the external dock, via a standard PCIE slot. Once the dock has been set up, the computer routes graphics requests to the external GPU, offering desktop performance from any system, including laptops and all-in-one (AIO) PCs. There is a performance hit when using external graphics docks, and this will worse with slower systems. A powerful laptop or computer is still needed to get the most out of an external graphics dock.
