VGA Cables & Video Connector Types Explained

Video Graphics Array (VGA) cables and connectors carry analog RGB video signals between a computer, laptop or other video source and a display such as a monitor, projector or TV. While newer digital standards like HDMI and DisplayPort are common today, VGA remains widely used in business, education and legacy systems because of its broad compatibility and simplicity.

What is VGA?

VGA (Video Graphics Array) is an analog video display standard introduced by IBM in 1987. Instead of digital signal encoding, VGA transmits continuous analog signals for red, green and blue video along with horizontal and vertical sync signals. The most common VGA connector is the three-row, 15-pin design accurately called DE-15, often also marketed as HD15.

Types of VGA Cables & Connectors

VGA-family cables vary by purpose and connector style. The key types you’ll see include:

  • Standard VGA Cable: A 15-pin male-to-male analog video cable (DE-15/HD15) used to connect PCs and video sources to monitors or projectors.
  • SVGA (Super VGA) Cables: Essentially the same 15-pin analog cable, but built with better shielding and quality that helps support higher resolutions and less interference at extended distances.
  • VGA Extension Cable: Used to increase cable length between a source and display when a standard VGA lead is not long enough.
  • VGA Splitter Cables: These duplicate a single VGA output to feed two displays. They don’t increase signal strength and may require active boosters for long distances.
  • VGA Adapters: Include gender changers (male-to-female), VGA to DVI (often passive depending on signal type), and VGA to HDMI solutions. Active converters are required when changing between analog (VGA) and digital (HDMI) formats.

Connector Formats and Pin Differences

The classic 15-pin VGA connector is a D-sub “high density” 3-row layout with analog RGB and sync signals. Although often called “DB15”, the technically correct name is DE-15 or HD15, and the three-row configuration distinguishes it from other D-sub connectors.

  • DE-15 / HD15: The standard VGA connector with 3 rows of 5 pins each - carries analog video and basic monitor data.
  • Mini-VGA or Mini-D15: Smaller VGA variants found on some laptops and compact devices; functionally VGA-compatible with the appropriate adapter.
  • Other D-Sub Connectors: Some graphics cards or older hardware use variants like DB13W3 or multi-pin connectors (e.g., DMS-59) that require breakout cables to VGA or DVI outputs.

Because VGA is analog, the signal quality can degrade over long cable runs and heavier electromagnetic interference, unlike digital standards which maintain signal integrity over greater distances.

Resolution Support & SVGA vs VGA

While the original VGA standard was associated with lower resolutions such as 640×480, modern SVGA cables are designed to carry higher resolution analog signals up to typical PC monitor ranges (e.g., 1920×1200 or slightly beyond). The term SVGA originally referred to an enhanced graphics mode, but in cables it’s generally used to describe better-quality VGA leads capable of higher video bandwidth.

Using VGA with Other Video Standards

Because VGA is analog and newer standards like HDMI and DVI are digital, compatibility depends on the type of connection:

  • VGA to DVI: VGA can connect to DVI-A or DVI-I connectors that carry analog signals. Passive adapters work only if the DVI port supports analog; otherwise an active converter is needed.
  • VGA to HDMI: Requires an active converter box because HDMI is digital only - analog VGA cannot be directly mapped to HDMI without signal conversion.
  • VGA to RCA / Analog Video: VGA carries RGB analog video but not composite video, so adapters or converters are required to translate timing and sync into RCA analog formats for legacy devices. Conversion quality depends on the circuitry used, not just cable pinouts.

Choosing the Right VGA Cable

When selecting VGA cables or adapters, consider factors like cable length, shielding quality, connector type and whether signal conversion is needed. Higher-quality SVGA cables with double or triple shielding reduce interference and support sharper images at higher resolutions. Ensure that the connectors match both your source and display - DE-15 for standard VGA, or specific adapter interfaces when converting between formats.

For legacy equipment or environments where analog video remains in use, VGA cables still offer reliable service - but for modern high-definition displays, digital standards like HDMI or DisplayPort are generally preferred for clarity, stability and additional features.

Important notes for customers:

VGA does not carry audio natively. Audio must always be connected separately using a 3.5 mm or RCA cable.

VGA image quality depends heavily on cable length and shielding. Longer or poorly shielded cables may cause ghosting, colour bleed or signal noise.

Adapters between VGA and digital formats such as HDMI or DisplayPort require active converters. Passive cables will not work due to analog to digital signal differences.

DE-15 (also known as HD15) is the only true VGA connector standard. Other pin layouts are not native VGA and require breakout or conversion solutions.

Simple buying advice:

If your device supports HDMI or DisplayPort, choose those first for the best picture and sound using a single cable.

Use DVI when working with older monitors that do not support HDMI but still need sharp digital video.

Choose VGA only when connecting to legacy equipment such as older projectors or monitors, and always connect audio separately.

When mixing VGA with digital connections like HDMI or DisplayPort, an active converter is required for the signal to work correctly.

Not sure which cable or adapter you need? Follow this simple guide:

Step 1: Check the output on your device
Look at the video port on your computer or media device. Common outputs are VGA, HDMI, DVI or DisplayPort.

Step 2: Check the input on your display
Check the port on your monitor, TV or projector. The input type must match or be converted.

Step 3: Do both ports match?
If yes, use a direct cable of the same type for best results.

Step 4: Mixing old and new connections?
If one side is VGA and the other is HDMI or DisplayPort, you will need an active converter, not just a cable.

Step 5: Do you need audio?
VGA and DVI do not carry audio. If sound is required, use a separate audio cable or choose HDMI or DisplayPort.

Step 6: Cable length matters
For longer distances, choose higher-quality cables or digital connections to avoid signal loss.

Quick tip: When in doubt, HDMI or DisplayPort is usually the easiest and most future-proof option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does VGA carry audio?
No. VGA only carries video. Audio must be connected separately using a 3.5 mm or RCA cable.

Can I use a simple VGA to HDMI cable?
No. VGA is analog and HDMI is digital. An active VGA to HDMI converter is required.

Why does my VGA picture look blurry?
This is usually caused by long cable lengths, poor shielding or electrical interference.

Is DVI better than VGA?
Yes. DVI provides a cleaner digital image, but still does not carry audio.

Which connection is best for modern screens?
HDMI or DisplayPort offers the best quality, audio support and easiest compatibility.
